(25 April 07) An American perspective on ANZAC Day
“….For those who don't know what ANZAC Day is, it is equivalent to Veteran's Day in the States. It was first observed in 1916 and is held on the day when the first Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed at Gallipoli in 1915. Since then it has come to encompass all of Australia and New Zealand 's war veterans…..The first aspect of ANZAC Day is, appropriately, the first thing of the day. At places throughout the country, even in very small towns, ceremonies are held in the time just before the sun rises, commemorating the landings at Gallipoli….As I think about my own activities on 11 November in the States, I can't say that (even though I am a veteran) I ever felt the kind of patriotism and bonding as I have during this morning ANZAC ceremony…..Over and over again, I've been reminded that one aspect of Australian culture celebrated on ANZAC Day is the idea of "mateship"…. ANZAC Day, April 25 , Bob Myer, American Thinker “…To an American, that sounds like a very strange word. A very rough translation might be friendship, but that's not really enough of an explanation. It actually has a definition : "a mode of conduct among Australian men that stresses equality, friendship, and solidarity….I wonder what sort of examples will be around in America when I have a child. At the moment, it seems that the most "celebrated" (which, incidentally, is a word which I have no respect for any longer) forms of bonding belong to those in the thug world, the celebrity moronosphere and hip-hop "culture". I hope these are replaced by something more akin to mateship. And I hope that in the US there can be something developed, some tradition built which echoes the sentiment of ANZAC Day, but in an American vein. These two things, I think, would go a way towards enhancing Americans' national and personal identities….”
(25 April 07) This is the best expose on the history of the cooling/warming debate produced so far, with headlines, graphics and timelines.
“…Journalists have warned of climate change for 100 years, but can't decide weather we face an ice age or warming… It was five years before the turn of the century and major media were warning of disastrous climate change. Page six of The New York Times was headlined with the serious concerns of “geologists.” Only the president at the time wasn't Bill Clinton; it was Grover Cleveland. And the Times wasn't warning about global warming – it was telling readers the looming dangers of a new ice age….Those concerns lasted well into the late 1920s…But when the earth's surface warmed less than half a degree, newspapers and magazines responded with stories about the new threat. Once again the Times was out in front, cautioning “the earth is steadily growing warmer.”… The New York Times ran warming stories into the late 1950s, but it too came around to the new fears. Just three decades ago, in 1975, the paper reported: “A Major Cooling Widely Considered to Be Inevitable.”….. That trend, too, cooled off and was replaced by the current era of reporting on the dangers of global warming. Just six years later, on Aug. 22, 1981, the Times quoted seven government atmospheric scientists who predicted global warming of an “almost unprecedented magnitude….” A fine short history of warming and cooling scares “….The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, amidst hysteria about the dangers of a new ice age. The media had been spreading warnings of a cooling period since the 1950s, but those alarms grew louder in the 1970s….“The cooling has already killed hundreds of thousands of people in poor nations,” wrote Lowell Ponte in his 1976 book “The Cooling.”….Today's global warming advocates probably don't even realize their claims aren't original. Before the cooling worries of the '70s, America went through global warming fever for several decades around World War II…..The nation entered the “longest warm spell since 1776,” according to a March 27, 1933, New York Times headline. Shifting climate gears from ice to heat, the Associated Press article began “That next ice age, if one is coming … is still a long way off.” One year earlier, the paper reported that “the earth is steadily growing warmer” in its May 15 edition. The Washington Post felt the heat as well and titled an article simply “Hot weather” on August 2, 1930….”
Newsweek April 1975
(25 April 07) “….There are ominous signs that the Earth's weather patterns have begun to change dramatically and that these changes may portend a drastic decline in food production – with serious political implications for just about every nation on Earth. The drop in food output could begin quite soon, perhaps only 10 years from now….. The evidence in support of these predictions has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it. In England , farmers have seen their growing season decline by about two weeks since 1950, with a resultant overall loss in grain production estimated at up to 100,000 tons annually. During the same time, the average temperature around the equator has risen by a fraction of a degree – a fraction that in some areas can mean drought and desolation…” The Cooling World , Newsweek, April 1975. “…Last April, in the most devastating outbreak of tornadoes ever recorded, 148 twisters killed more than 300 people and caused half a billion dollars' worth of damage in 13 U.S. states…A survey completed last year by Dr. Murray Mitchell of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reveals a drop of half a degree in average ground temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere between 1945 and 1968…. To the layman, the relatively small changes in temperature and sunshine can be highly misleading. Reid Bryson of the University of Wisconsin points out that the Earth's average temperature during the great Ice Ages was only about seven degrees lower than during its warmest eras – and that the present decline has taken the planet about a sixth of the way toward the Ice Age average. Others regard the cooling as a reversion to the “little ice age” conditions that brought bitter winters to much of Europe and northern America between 1600 and 1900…”
Time Magazine June 1974
(25 April 07) “…..In Africa , drought continues for the sixth consecutive year, adding terribly to the toll of famine victims. During 1972 record rains in parts of the U.S. , Pakistan and Japan caused some of the worst flooding in centuries….As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing…..” Another Ice Age? Time Magazine, June 1974 “….Telltale signs are everywhere —from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice in the waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving creature like the armadillo from the Midwest.Since the 1940s the mean global temperature has dropped about 2.7° F….Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round. Scientists have found other indications of global cooling….The changing weather is apparently connected with differences in the amount of energy that the earth's surface receives from the sun. Changes in the earth's tilt and distance from the sun could, for instance, significantly increase or decrease the amount of solar radiation falling on either hemisphere—thereby altering the earth's climate…..”
(24 April 07) Its worth noting that Ayyan Hirsi Ali will deliver the closing address at the Sydney Writers Festival in May
“…A community debate over religious freedom surfaced in Western Pennsylvania last week when Dutch feminist author Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali refugee who has lived under the threat of death for denouncing her Muslim upbringing, made an appearance at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown . Islamic leaders tried to block the lecture….They argued that Hirsi Ali's attacks against the Muslim faith in her book, "Infidel," and movie, "Submission," are "poisonous and unjustified" and create dissension in their community. Although university officials listened to Islamic leaders' concerns, the lecture planned last year took place Tuesday evening under tight security, with no incidents. Imam Fouad ElBayly, president of the Johnstown Islamic Center, was among those who objected to Hirsi Ali's appearance. "She has been identified as one who has defamed the faith. If you come into the faith, you must abide by the laws, and when you decide to defame it deliberately, the sentence is death," said ElBayly, who came to the U.S. from Egypt in 1976….” Furor over author Ayaan Hirsi Ali's visit stirs debate on religious freedom by Robin Acton, Pittsburgh Tribune “….Although ElBayly believes a death sentence is warranted for Hirsi Ali, he stressed that America is not the jurisdiction where such a crime should be punished. Instead, Hirsi Ali should be judged in a Muslim country after being given a trial..(how decent of him)…. Zahida Chaudhary, a member of the education council and education secretary at the Muslim Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh in Monroeville , insisted that Islam is a peaceful religion. "The Prophet Mohammed was a peacemaker and a role model for humanity," ….Haynes said the key to America 's success in religious diversity is for people of all religions to understand that you "can't just tolerate" the fact that Muslims or Catholics or Protestants or Mormons or Jews have a right to be here. He said this country is a "level playing field" where everyone is free to practice their religion, but not to carry out extreme ideas that violate basic principles….”
(24 April 07) “…Whatever the Australian Labor Party decides at its national conference, which begins next Friday, whatever sham debates are waged between Left and Right factions, whatever policy victories on mining or industrial relations are stage-managed to bolster Kevin Rudd's leadership, it will be irrelevant for the direction of a future federal Labor government….We live in a conservative world and the Labor Party takes its policy cues from the conservative framework. Left-of-centre views may still have currency at universities, but in the real world of voter preferences and policies that work there is no market for outdated left-of-centre policy products. Everywhere, leftist policies are in retreat….Nor is this trend just an Australian phenomenon. Tony Blair's New Labour Government in Britain has largely continued Margaret Thatcher's policies. The Iron Lady just did the dirty work in tackling the country's out-of-control trade unions and privatising those decrepit overstaffed government-owned businesses...” All Australians are conservatives now , Scott Prasser, The Australian “…Far from there being a third way as Blair and Rudd pretend, there is merely the conservative way or a return to non-viable policies of the statist Left. Nor, as Rudd suggests, is there a fork in the road and a choice for voters at the next federal election to take a different policy track to the present conservative reform agenda. Such policies, after all, are delivering so much prosperity…Conservatives also deplored the costly, distortive and universal welfare programs of the Whitlam era and believed the poverty cycle would be broken only by jobs created through a growing economy, not by job subsidies or work creation schemes….labour deregulation started by the Keating government and accelerated by John Howard has become unstoppable. It has delivered fewer strikes, real wage growth and record low unemployment…. let the Labor conference pretend to debate policy and to criticise the Howard Government. It really doesn't matter, for in office Labor governments eat their slogans of reaction and implement the conservative reform agenda with enthusiasm….”
(24 April 07) Was his pathology enabled by the PC university? Or to ask the question differently --- was Cho ever taught to respect others, to admire the good things about his host country, and to discipline himself to build a positive life? …. And that answer is readily available on the websites of Cho's English Department at Virginia Tech. This is a wonder world of PC weirdness. English studies at VT are a post-modern Disney World in which nihilism, moral and sexual boundary breaking, and fantasies of Marxist revolutionary violence are celebrated. They show up in a lot of faculty writing. Not by all the faculty, but probably by more than half…..Just check out their websites…. I don't know any Americans who are in love with war, but that is the picture Cho got from his teachers. Having spent the last 14 years as a resident alien in the school system, he could know nothing else.
And then there is the big Marxist website from Professor Brizee, all in fiery red against pitch black, showing old, mass-murder-inspiring Karl flanked by two raised fists . It celebrates revolutionary violence and hate for capitalist America (which is paying for Cho's education) Was Cho taught to hate ? James Lewis, American Thinker “…Critical Social Theory" --- the euphemism for PoMo (Post Modern) Marxism --- is a big part of English teaching at VT. The Marxist page links prominently to the British Socialist Worker's Party, which is currently leading the charge for Islamic fascism through such creatures as George Galloway…. Take a look at the hiring and promotion criteria for English at VT, and you see what their current values are. Acting in loco parentis , with the care, protectiveness, and alertness for trouble among young people is the last thing on their minds. They are there to do "research, " to act like fake revolutionaries, and to stir up young people to go out and revolt against society. Well, somebody just did…. I'm sorry but VT English doesn't look like a place that gives lost and angry adolescents the essential boundaries for civilized behavior. In fact, in this perversely disorienting PoMo world, the very words "civilized behavior" are ridiculed…”
(21 April 07) Strasbourg, France – “….When France last elected a president, the far right's Jean-Marie Le Pen shocked the world by muscling his way into the runoff against incumbent Jacques Chirac. The outcome seemed to underline rising fears of an ultranationalist resurgence across Europe …. The same issues preoccupying the French -- jobs, immigration, integrating a large and restive Muslim minority -- have catapulted many of Mr. Le Pen's views into the mainstream, with leading candidates both left and right co-opting elements of his ideas….' Ultranationalist fervour hits Europe, Jamey Keaten, Associated Press “….A phenomenon seen across Europe: Deep anxieties over security and unemployment have fed a sharp shift to the right, forcing mainstream politicians to embrace policies that just a few years ago would have seemed the exclusive terrain of ultranationalist forces…. In many European countries, support for the hard right is blamed on voters' perception of politics as a tweedledum-and-tweedledee affair that perpetuates moderate governments unwilling to tackle difficult issues head-on.
(21 April 07) “… Until 9/11, the western world was largely ignorant of the religion of Islam, of its goals, of its aspirations. Indeed, even since 9/11, most people, and that includes our politicians, would not score very highly in a test of their knowledge on the subject. It should be obvious to all thinking people that our politicians are actually unaware, dare I say blind, to the dangers that Islam will increasingly cause us….As the old saying goes, knowledge is power. But what we often don't hear uttered is its converse: Ignorance is weakness….The West is far weaker than it need be because of this ignorance of Islam….I'll give you some good reasons why this is so. And none of them - absolutely none of them - are based on hatred….we are going to have to bite the bullet and deal, head on, with the issues these reasons raise….In Islam, all power rests with Allah, the god of Muslims. The Qur'an, their holy book, is always taken literally…In the West, the ideal political system is democracy. In democracy, all power rests with the people, and they exercise that power at the polls. In a democracy, all power filters in the opposite direction from Islam. In democracy it filters up; in Islam, down!!!! Islam: The Enemy of Democracy and Freedom , Mark Alexander, www.librabunda.blogspot.com “….Herein lies the greatest barrier to the miscibility of the two worlds: the western world and the Islamic world….How can one bring democracy to a region of the world where the people who inhabit that region believe that all power rests with Allah, and where they believe that Allah has prescribed their way of life for them for then, for now, and for all time?... no politicians' sweet talk, posturing, or manœvring, will get us out of this one without conflict at some point in the future. One of the biggest problems for the West is its devotion to the concept of freedom of religion….These two systems are totally immiscible, and unfortunately, we have imported this immiscibility right into the heart of the West; and to our own great disadvantage, and to the disadvantage of our long-term peace and security….Wake up to the harsh realities of life in the twenty-first century! We've got some collective thinking to do if we wish to save ourselves from darkness…”
(21 April 07) In 1974, former Algerian President Houari Boumedienne warned Europe in a speech at the UN : “One day, millions of men will leave the Southern Hemisphere to go to the Northern Hemisphere. And they will not go there as friends. Because they will go there to conquer it. And they will conquer it with their sons. The wombs of our women will give us victory.”……. “Soon we will take power in this country. Those who criticize us now, will regret it. They will have to serve us. Prepare, for the hour is near.” — Belgium-based imam in 1994…. It doesn't take much skill to calculate that unlimited migration will spell certain death for a tiny Scandinavian nation such as Norway — not in a matter of generations, but theoretically even within a few weeks … The European Union plans to open a job centre in Mali , in an experiment aimed at boosting the migration to the EU that is skilled, legal and temporary immigration from Africa . In return for assistance with legal “circular immigration” Frattini expects Mali to boost its cooperation in the fight against illegal immigration to the EU. If successful, the EU will establish a network of job centres across Africa . In the 1960s Germany introduced a similar scheme for Turkish ‘guest workers' who came to do the jobs no one wanted…” The Migration Flood by Dymphna “…. A study by the Royal Elcano Institute in Madrid argues that Europe may be on the brink of a flood of migrants from sub-Saharan Africa , with potentially historic implications. Rickard Sandell, chief investigator for demography, reported: “Both economic and demographic data provide evidence that this is only the beginning of an immigration phenomenon that could evolve into one of the largest in history…the mass assault on Spain's African border may just be a first warning of what to expect of the future… The waves of migration that the Western world is faced with now are magnitudes greater in scope than those which brought down the Roman Empire . At least 2.2 million migrants will arrive in the West every year until 2050, according to a United Nations report . It appears to be taken for granted by the UN that we will sit back, bleed to death and accept all these millions to flood our countries… Many Westerners watch with resigned fatalism as we are told by our leaders and our media that this is “inevitable.” But nothing is inevitable. Our societies will collapse, yet we are supposed to stand by quietly and simply observe our own demise…..”
(21 April 07) “…Let me be very clear,” CIA Director Michael Hayden told ambassadors from the European Union last month over lunch at the German embassy. “My countrymen, my government, my Agency and I believe that we are a nation at war. We are in a state of armed conflict with al Qa'ida and its affiliates. We believe that this conflict with al Qa'ida is global in its scope. We also believe that a precondition for our winning this conflict is to take the fight to the enemy wherever he may be.”…. “Let me advise you to please NOT assume that the current American approach to the Global War on Terrorism is the product of just one administration or just this president,” Hayden warned… Last June, the lead investigator for the commission - Italian leftist Claudio Fava – released a huge data dump on the press, exposing the involvement of twenty-one companies and one bank in what soon became known as “Air CIA,” the network of private aircraft used to convoy prisoners. He also released flight logs, tail numbers, and other information on the CIA aircraft being run by covert proprietaries – shell companies set up at great expense to disguise CIA involvement….” The Trans-Atlantic Terror Divide , by Kenneth R. Timmerman, FrontPageMagazine.com “….It was a massive breach of U.S. covert operations, that had the impact of shutting down the whole system of capturing and detaining suspected terrorists in Europe . Fava is pleased with his accomplishments…The Europeans – just as their idols in the Clinton administration – believe that terrorism is a manageable threat that is best treated by lawyers and indictments. Whatever we do, they want us to keep it gentle enough so that jihadi Muslims will not take it as an attack on Islam….Inside the CIA, visitors can see a sign with a stark reminder, he told the EU ambassadors.” ….Today's date is September 12, 2001. We make no apologies for this attitude, for our legal definition of the conflict, or… for our actions….”
(21 April 07)“…Religious-inspired violence took 120,000 lives in Algeria in the 1990s alone. And the recent bombings in Algeria and Morocco are clear indication that the jihadists are not done yet. They are re- inventing themselves once more under the tutelage of Al-Qaeda. The revival of violence is not as surprising as it seems, for the raw material that supports violence is widely available. Fanaticism is not in short supply, and it is not hard for terrorist organisations to find recruits…. For years, researchers have been trying to explain the Islamic phenomenon in relation to the political and economic make-up of Arab societies…. There is a deadly virus in our midst, one that is passed on from one generation to the next…” Jihad on the horizon by Khalil El-Anani, from the Egyptian publication AL-AHRAM . “….Al-Qaeda likes to operate in peripheral and chaotic areas. This is why it went to Sudan in the early 1990s. It has operated in the border areas linking Ethiopia , Eritrea and Sudan . It enjoys certain privileges on the Pakistan-Afghan borders. And it sent its operatives to the jungle area separating Ethiopia and Somalia . Now, it is the turn of Algeria and Morocco . Al-Qaeda is regrouping…. Al-Qaeda is trying to capitalise on official Arab failure to resolve the "core" problems of the region, in Palestine , Lebanon and Iraq . It now claims that the only solution is "jihad" against "Crusaders and Zionists"…The question now is not what Al-Qaeda is doing, but what we can do to stop the tide of suicidal madness that runs from Pakistan to Algeria …. The fragmentation of the jihadist movement is likely to re-ignite religious violence in the region in a more brutal form than anything we've seen so far. And once things calm down in Iraq , a whole generation of jihadists will be ready to seek adventure elsewhere…'
(19 April 07) I mentioned this on air a couple of times earlier this week. Since then I have had many requests for the piece to be posted
“…Over the past decade the people of this country have endured grievous wrongs, wrongs tolerated because of the belief that the Government of this country would act in its best interests and not harm it….This Government has overseen and promoted the invasion of this country leading to social upheaval that is unprecedented, the invasion continues but this invasion is not anything like the last invasion of these Islands in 1066 where two clearly identified forces engaged in bloody battle, no this invasion is one where the Government has surrendered the borders of the Realm, depleted and underfunded our military forces, ensured that the legal framework penalized the genuine occupants of the country and rewarded the interloper…” Is it time for a military coup, from the uppompeii blog “…Many people in this land find it almost impossible to find a place to live yet low or unskilled immigrants from Somalia, Pakistan and Iraq etc are given accommodation as soon as they land here and claim asylum.
(19 April 07) To further reinforce and buttress the argument set out in the previous posting, I think this piece from the Daily Mail further makes the point.
“…Polygamous husbands settling in Britain with multiple wives can claim extra benefits for their "harems" even though bigamy is a crime in the UK…Opposition MPs are demanding an urgent change in the law, claiming that the Government is recognising and rewarding a custom which has no legal status and which is "alien" to this country's cultural traditions….Officials said yesterday a review was now under way into whether the state should continue to pay out income support, jobseeker's allowance and housing and council tax benefits to 'extra' spouses. Islamic law allows a man to take up to four wives, providing he can provide for them fairly and equally. But British law only ever recognises one spouse, while bigamy is punishable by up to seven years in jail…. if a husband and his wives arrive and settle in Britain having wed in a country where polygamy is legal, then the UK benefits system recognises his extra wives as dependents and pays them accordingly….” Polygamous husbands can claim cash for their harems , Daily Mail “….Official DWP (Department of Work and Pensions) guidelines on housing and council tax benefit states: "If you were legally married to more than one partner under the laws of a country that permits this, then your relationship is called a polygamous marriage. "In this case your household consists of you and any partners who live with you and to whom you are married." Officials were unable to say when the rules were brought in, claiming they had "evolved over decades"…. MP for Monmouth David Davies condemned the arrangements as "appalling", and called for an immediate halt to the payments, saying: "People who come to this country must be prepared to abide by our laws and rules. Polygamy is completely alien to our cultural and legal tradition, and it's disgraceful that our benefits system is recognising and rewarding it…..Why are some people in Government falling over themselves to undermine every tradition that has made this country what it is?..."
(19 April 07)“…Islamic activists in Europe have taken a leaf out of the old Communist guidebook for the "long march through the institutions." In Antwerp , for example, the City Council has been infiltrated by Islamist fundamentalists -- Belgian citizens, of course -- who keep pushing the envelope with impunity….From the British city of Leeds to Livorno in Italy and from Luxembourg to Ljubljana in Slovenia , multiculturalism is pretty much a bust. Quicksand is the only common ground between Western values and militant Muslim fundamentalism… In Germany , the weekly Der Spiegel documented case after case of Muslims, and local German benefactors or sympathizers, busy paving the way for a Muslim "parallel" society. A Moroccan-born, 26-year-old German who had been subjected to her husband's "corporal punishment" and was denied grounds for divorce triggered a nationwide cry of outrage….Judge Christa Datz-Winter of Frank furt's family court even quoted the Koran -- Sura 4, verse 34 -- when she wrote in her decision the Muslim Holy Book contains "both the husband's right to use corporal punishment against a disobedient wife and the establishment of the husband's superiority over the wife…..” Europe 's Muslim ‘parallel' society , Arnaud de Borchgrave, Editor at Large United Press International. “…Conservatives see the multicultural illusions of recent decades as naïve. Islamists are not interested in cultural diversity ….The European cult of appeasement has given free rein to radical imams whose only goal is to Islamicize Christian Europe. The terrain is fertile. Only 20 percent of Europe's Christians attend church services on Sunday, but mosques are packed with worshippers on Fridays, where sermons are political paeans to the courageous jihadis in Iraq and Afghanistan . The fact they are fighting American and NATO troops (including Germans) is left unmentioned. But Judge Klaus Feldmann of the Potsdam District Court outside Berlin ruled that ZDF public television had to delete reference on its Web site to the former imam of Berlin 's Mevlana mosque as a "hate preacher."
(18 April 07) “….Last week my favourite legal rag, Lawyers Weekly, quoted judge B.T. Sully in his farewell address to the NSW Supreme Court: "Proposals for law reform these days normally start with people who are single-issue obsessives; or people who have an unwholesome ambition for personal power or aggrandisement; or people who, to speak frankly, are unstable."… Except in one respect. Those peddling a charter of rights for Australia are also people who know a thing or two about trickery. They have plotted out a stealth strategy aimed at duping us into believing a charter is a harmless little law that will only improve our democracy. And the trick may work unless we, the great unwashed, wake up to the radical changes charters have in store for us…. For now, all the talk is about charters. The same scheme deployed to get charters up and running in Victoria and the ACT is snaking its way around Australia ….” Beware, Charted waters can have murky depths , Janet Albrechtsen, The Australian “….Alas, discussion is dominated by lawyers and their charter buddies in academe. The Law Society of NSW wants a charter. So does the Law Council of Australia. A charter promises to be the mother lode of precious shakedown litigation for them….Watch out for the next stage in a phony process that also pretends to be about talking to the people. The Victorian caper will be repeated across Australia … It involves setting up an independent committee or a consultative committee chaired by a charter lover and stacked with fellow devotees or at least with people who won't oppose one…”
(18 April 07) “…One of the most far-sighted, democratic and generous constitutions ever devised was made into law on December 5, 1936, in Russia, a nation previously beset by feudalism, profligacy, civil war and disorder. The 1936 constitution introduced universal direct suffrage, and the rights to health care, aged care, housing, education and the right to work. It was a triumph for the people…. Like all the left's utopias, the rhetoric was glorious, but not the reality. Societies do not succeed or fail because of laws, or coercion, but because of collective behaviour and shared values. Yet Australia is approaching a point of an unhealthy abundance of laws, lawyers, litigation and threats of legal action…. there are legal activists in Australia committed to the cause of more compunction, more coercion, and more codification. They want a whole new layer of law….” A dead fish in a sea of red tape , Paul Sheehan, Sydney Morning Herald “…Ideally, they want a comprehensive bill of rights enshrined in the Australian constitution. In the interim, they'll accept a state charter of human rights. Without such a charter, they argue, many basic rights are either stunted or vulnerable…. This sounds like mother's milk, but Carr has an altogether different view. He is alarmed that left-wing ideologues are working to have a commitment to a bill of rights inserted into the Labor Party's federal policy platform this year. "A bill of rights or a charter of rights is only a device for shifting decision-making from elected governments to unelected judges," he told me. "That's why it is passionately supported by parts of the legal profession…"
(15 April 07) “…..The origin of the greatest climate change on Earth is unknown. Between 800 and 600Ma, (million years ago) there were two major glacial events. Sea level changed by up to 400m and interglacial sea temperatures were +40ºC. Glaciation was at the sea level and equatorial. After glaciation, the atmosphere had some 20% CO 2 and bacteria thrived in the warm oceans. Multicellular life appeared, diversified and used the CO 2 to make shells and skeletons….Another major mass extinction took place at 214 Ma…. India collided with Asia at 50Ma. Uplift produced the Tibetan Plateau which started to scrub CO 2 out of the atmosphere. The Tibetan plateau is still rising and CO 2 is still being scrubbed out of the atmosphere…. The penultimate interglacial was 120,000 years ago. Sea level was 6m higher than at present and the planet was far warmer and wetter than now. During this greenhouse, there was more vegetation than today and atmospheric CO 2 was 78% of that today. Ice core data shows that after warming, the atmospheric CO 2 and CH 4 content increased suggesting that atmospheric temperature rise drives an increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide and methane contents some 800 years later….” The Cold Hard Facts about Global Warming by Professor Ian Plimer “….Sea levels were 1-3m higher in a greenhouse 6,000 years ago…. Global cooling from 1,300-500BC gave rise to the advance of glaciers, migration, invasion and famine. Global warming commenced again at 500BC, there was an excess of food and great empires grew, such as the Ashoka, Ch'hin and the Roman. Contemporary records and Roman clothing shows that conditions were some 5ºC warmer than today…. Changes in ocean currents resulted in the Medieval Warm Period from 900- 1300AD. The first to feel the change were the Vikings who were able to navigate the northern waters, colonized Newfoundland, colonized Greenland and established extensive trade routes as far south as the modern Gulf States. On Greenland , crops were grown and there were cattle. This would not be possible today…. To put such measurements into perspective over the history of time, changes in atmospheric temperature in the Twentieth Century can only be considered small and slow. A three-decade global coverage of satellite atmosphere temperatures shows only modest warming in the Northern Hemisphere, a slight cooling in the Southern Hemisphere and an increase in solar radiation. Solar measurements can account for 0.47ºC of the projected 0.61ºC twentieth Century atmospheric temperature rise….” To read this article you need (free) Adobe Acrobat Viewer.
(15 April 07)“…Muslims love talking about the Crusades… and Christians love apologizing for them. To hear both parties tell the story, one would believe that Muslims were just peacefully minding their own business in lands that were legitimately Muslim, when Christian armies decided to wage holy war and kill “millions”…. Every part of this myth is a lie…” The Crusades “…Here are some quick facts…The first Crusade began in 1095… 460 years after the first Christian city was overrun by Muslim armies, 457 years after Jerusalem was conquered by Muslim armies, 453 years after Egypt was taken by Muslim armies, 443 after Muslims first plundered Italy, 427 years after Muslim armies first laid siege to the Christian capital of Constantinople, 380 years after Spain was conquered by Muslim armies, 363 years after France was first attacked by Muslim armies, 249 years after Rome itself was sacked by a Muslim army, and only after centuries of church burnings, killings, enslavement and forced conversions of Christians. By the time the Crusades finally began, Muslim armies had conquered two-thirds of the Christian world….Europe had been harassed by Muslims since the first few years following Muhammad's death. As early as 652, Muhammad's followers launched raids on the island of Sicily , waging a full-scale occupation 200 years later that lasted well over two centuries and was punctuated by massacres, such as that at the town of Castrogiovanni , in which 8,000 Christians were put to death. In 1084, ten years before the first crusade, Muslims staged another devastating Sicilian raid, burning churches in Reggio, enslaving monks and raping an abbey of nuns before carrying them into captivity….”
(9 April 07) “….. the Muslim Brotherhood is a global movement whose members cooperate with each other throughout the world, based on the same religious worldview - the spread of Islam, until it rules the world.” On the Brotherhood's website Akef also tellingly said: "I have complete faith that Islam will invade Europe and America , because Islam has logic and a mission.”… And while the final goal of the Brotherhood is, as its publications and leaders openly say, world dominance, the group adopts different tactics to obtain it. Flexibility and deceit are the two qualities that distinguish the Brotherhood from groups such as al Qaeda and that have allowed the group to thrive throughout its history….Its leaders publicly vow the group's dedication to integration and democracy, representing themselves as mainstream, and seeking to portray themselves as the representatives of the various Western Muslim communities in the media and in dialogues with Western governments. Yet, speaking Arabic or Turkish before their fellows Muslims, they drop their facade and embrace radicalism….The Brotherhood's plans are there to be seen. In 1990 Yusuf al-Qaradawi, possibly Sunni Islam's most influential scholar today and the unofficial theological leader of the international Muslim Brotherhood, published a book called Priorities of the Islamic Movement in the Coming Phase…” The Muslim Brotherhood in Holland , by Lorenzo Vidino Qaradawi explains how Muslim expatriates living in Europe, Australia and North America “are no longer few in numbers,” and that their presence is both permanent and destined to grow with new waves of immigration….The consequences of their activities of radicalization of the Muslim population are particularly dangerous considering the tensions between Muslim minorities and the rest of society that are present in Holland and in virtually every European country….rather than confronting the state power with direct violence, this strategy seeks to gradually undermine it by infiltrating and eventually taking over the civil service, the judicature, schools, local administrations, et cetera. Apart from clandestine infiltration, covert Dawa (prosletizing) may also be aimed at inciting Muslim minorities to civil disobedience, promoting parallel power structures or even inciting Muslim masses to a revolt.”…. Moderates throughout the Muslim world have repeatedly warned about the threat posed by the Brotherhood….The Brotherhood's added danger lies in its ability to fake moderation, operate under our nose, and spread its divisive message undisturbed.
(8 April 07) Its been several years since I've posted anything on Antonio Gramsci , and The Frankfurt School but with all the concern about the decline and undermining of many elements of western society, or as its referred to “The long march through the institutions”, I thought it timely to revisit the subject. It's quite apparent from talk radio that many people are concerned, confused, frustrated and angry as to what's going on. Hopefully the links and the posting below will go some way to explaining it.
“….Behind the many maddening attacks on America's popular culture is Italian Communist theoretician Antonio Gramsci's strategy for achieving the total state…..Aldous Huxley, author of the classic anti-totalitarian novel Brave New World, explained that the most efficient totalitarian system would be one in which the rulers would "control a population of slaves who do not have to be coerced, because they love their servitude." In Huxley's model of the total state, the population was controlled through the use of sex, drugs, vapid entertainment, government-generated slogans, and manufactured social fads….Russian anti-Communist Alexander Zinovyev, a world-renowned author, has described how the West, particularly the United States, is descending into a totalitarian culture of the sort predicted by Huxley. "It is enough to switch on the TV set, to go to the movies, to open a best-seller, to listen to the ubiquitous music," complained Zinovyen in the July 24, 1999 issue of France's Le Figaro , "and you'll find them propagating the cult of sex, violence and money….” Gramsci: A method to the madness, by William Norman Grigg “…. Noble slogans about tolerance and respect for others are concealing those three pillars of totalitarian democracy. " ….Often, power cannot be seized through the sudden imposition of a total dictatorship; instead, it must be obtained through the process of patient gradualism -- the persistent subversion of vital institutions and the incremental consolidation of power …..The success of the Gramscian cultural assault upon America was attested to by Michael Walzer in the Winter 1996 issue of the Marxist journal Dissent ….These changes, Walzer observed, "reflect the leftism or liberalism of lawyers, judges, federal bureaucrats, professors, school teachers, social workers, journalists, television and screen writers -- not the population at large… The battle cry of Gramsci's disciples is : "Capture the culture!"
(4April 07) Talking the other morning about galaxys 60 million light years away. This “journey" put a few things into perspective. (To view this you need 'Powerpoint' or a free 'Powerpoint' viewer downloaded from Microsoft)
(4April 07)“….Not many years ago the brilliant Orientalist, Bernard Lewis, published a short history of the Islamic world's decline, entitled "What Went Wrong?" Astonishingly, there was, among many Western "progressives," a vocal dislike for the title. It is a false premise, these critics protested. They ignored Mr. Lewis's implicit statement that things have been, or could be, right…..These "progressives" frequently cite the need to examine "root causes." In this they are correct: Terrorism is only the manifestation of a disease and not the disease itself. But the root-causes are quite different from what they think. As a former member of Jemaah Islamiya, a group led by al Qaeda's second in command, Ayman al-Zawahiri, I know firsthand that the inhumane teaching in Islamist ideology can transform a young, benevolent mind into that of a terrorist. Without confronting the ideological roots of radical Islam it will be impossible to combat it….it is ironic and discouraging that many non-Muslim, Western intellectuals--who unceasingly claim to support human rights--have become obstacles to reforming Islam. Political correctness among Westerners obstructs unambiguous criticism of Shariah's inhumanity…” The Trouble With Islam by Tawfik Hamid onetime member of Jemaah Islamiya, an Islamist terrorist group, is a medical doctor and Muslim reformer living in the West , Opinion Journal “…Western feminists duly fight in their home countries for equal pay and opportunity, but seemingly ignore, under a façade of cultural relativism, that large numbers of women in the Islamic world live under threat of beating, execution and genital mutilation, or cannot vote, drive cars and dress as they please… The tendency of many Westerners to restrict themselves to self-criticism further obstructs reformation in Islam… Western appeasement of their Muslim communities has exacerbated the problem…. Progressives need to realize that radical Islam is based on an antiliberal system. They need to awaken to the inhumane policies and practices of Islamists around the world. They need to realize that Islamism spells the death of liberal values. And they must not take for granted the respect for human rights and dignity that we experience in America , and indeed, the West, today….”
(3April 07) “… Britain is not in as feeble a position as is sometimes thought. It is the world's fourth military power, and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have left it with a substantial force on each of Iran 's flanks. More to the point, these troops are part of a mighty coalition. Judged by press comment, there has been a more wholesome concern for British sailors and Royal Marines in the rest of the Anglosphere, including Australia , than in Britain ….Why, then, do we go through the pantomime of treating Iran as a proper sovereign state? Why the summonses of ambassadors, the arguments over territoriality, the insistence on maritime law? These things mean nothing to the ayatollahs, as was clear from the very first act of their revolutionary junta in 1979, namely the hostage taking at the US embassy. Think for a moment about what that act represented. The sanctity of embassies is the cornerstone of international relations….When the mullahs seized the US legation, they were sending out a deliberate message: "We do not recognise your system. Your notions of territorial jurisdiction mean nothing to us…." Punish mullahs for act of piracy , Daniel Hannan: Iran should face robust action rather than polite entreaties for its abduction of British navy, The Australian “…. They got away with it, too….Before you complain about the consequences of escalation, think about the consequences of non-escalation. For 30 years, Britain has indulged the revolutionaries, sending foreign ministers to Tehran even while the ayatollahs flout every rule that governs relations between nations. Non-escalation on our side, in other words, is encouraging a good deal of escalation on theirs. Let us be clear: Iran has invaded the territory of an allied government and deployed force against uniformed coalition personnel. By any definition, that is an act of war. Is Britain really going to react with an indifferent shrug and a mutter about what a mistake it was to invade Iraq?
(3April 07) “….Imagine a World War II movie with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum doing nothing while standing on the bridge of a well-armed war ship watching below as fellow American soldiers are being whisked away by a few Japanese in a small craft in the waters of the South Pacific. We would cringe in disbelief. It would not be soldier-like, patriotic, or manly. What sissies, we would think, what about the spirit of comradeship embodied in “all for one and one for all”? We would be ashamed at such an act of timidity and passivity. That is what happened last week in the Persian Gulf . A British naval vessel and crew stood by while Iranian boats pirated away a group of British soldiers…. This war has become demoralizing because of repeated incidents of this nature: the unwillingness of Western powers to crush the enemy even in service of defending our own people….So concerned are we about not offending Muslim pride we have thrown away our own. The West has decided that all things Islamic are to be granted a reverence we no longer grant ourselves….” England's New War Motto: We Shall Not Fight Them on the Beaches; We Shall Not Fight Them on the Seas “…I don't blame the soldiers, I blame their superiors. In fact, the superiors might be blameless given they must first consult the military lawyers and politicians: a group not known for physical bravery and valour. The soldiers are afraid of being court-martialled and the military brass is scared to death of being indicted for war crimes…. we should have sent in a battalion of social workers…. A half century of demented left/liberal thinking has raised tens of millions in America, especially those who've gone to university, with a disdain for the West and self-hate of their own country, America…. No question, Britain is afraid. One minister recently wrote a Saudi prince: “After the train bombing in London , we dutifully enacted the legislation you demanded which would make it a hate-crime for anyone in Britain to criticize Islam.” Britain has shown its fear. Arabia has seen Anglo cravenness and weakness. England is bowing to a new monarch….”
(3April 07) “…Will Britain , with a multiculturalist philosophy permeating many sectors of society, survive the coming storm with its anglo saxon values intact? I've asked that question before here . I have also posted that Islam should under no circumstance be protected from criticism, to the contrary, it needs to be put under the light of scrutiny and subjected to reasoned criticism if it is ever to moderate and modernize …. Today, The Guardian is reporting that many teachers in Britain are altering their school lesson plans on "controversial subjects" so as "not to cause offense" . . . to guess who?....
Schools are dropping controversial subjects from history lessons - such as the Holocaust and the Crusades - because teachers do not want to cause offence, Government research has found. Some teachers have dropped the Holocaust completely from lessons over fears that Muslim pupils might express anti-Semitic reactions in class. And one school avoided teaching the Crusades because its "balanced" handling of the topic would directly contradict what was taught in local mosques….” This is so fundamentally wrong , towncommons.blogspot.com “…The report, funded by the Department for Education and Skills, said: "Teachers and schools avoid emotive and controversial history for a variety of reasons, some of which are well-intentioned….It would seem that the multiculturalist philosophy has so seeped into the mainstream of British society that even the teaching of BRITISH history, as well as teaching about the single most well documented historical event in history – THE HOLOCAUST - must give way to the versions of history espoused in radical mosques. This is beyond insanity….”
(3April 07) “When they cook a dish in the Middle East, it is traditional to put the meat on top of the rice when they serve it. They kidnapped a woman’s baby in Baghdad, a toddler, and because the mother was unable to pay the ransom, they returned her child – beheaded, roasted and served on a mound of rice.” The infant’s crime was to be an Assyrian, but this story, reported by the Barnabus Fund, went unnoticed in the West, like so many other horrific accounts of Christian persecution in Iraq…..” We must not let this ancient Church slide into oblivion, Ed West, The Catholic Herald “….Last October, Islamists beheaded a priest in Mosul in revenge for the Pope’s remarks about Islam at Regensburg. But never let it be said that jihadis do not have a sense of ironic humour: that same month they crucified a 14-year-old Christian boy in Basra…. The Assyrians are one of the world’s oldest civilisations. Their empire collapsed in 612 BC after four and a half millennia of civilisation; Rome was still a village and the Angles and Saxons were a thousand years away from forming a partnership. Now, while one of the world’s oldest Christian nations faces extinction at the hands of Islamic extremists, the West does nothing.
House 1 :
(1April 07) The four-bedroom home was planned so that "every room has a relationship with something in the landscape that's different from the room next door. Each of the rooms feels like a slightly different place." The resulting single-story house is a paragon of environmental planning. The passive-solar house is built of honey-colored native limestone and positioned to absorb winter sunlight … . A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof urns; wastewater from sinks, toilets, and showers cascades into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is then used to irrigate the landscaping around the four-bedroom home, (which) uses indigenous grasses, shrubs, and flowers to complete the exterior treatment of the home … . ” A Tale of Two Houses
This 20-room, 8-bathroom house consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year. The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, this house devoured nearly 221,000 kWh, more than 20 times the national average. Last August alone, the house burned through 22,619 kWh, guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year.
(1April 07) You may have heard about or read about The Muslim Brotherhood and wondered so what!!! Who the hell are they!!
Take 3 mins and 48 seconds out of your life an learn about The Muslim Brotherhood. (for buffering you may need to let it run through once) The Muslim Brotherhood is alive and well, moving and shaking and undermining in Australia and most of the western world. See The Muslim Brotherhood in Australia from April 2006 and The Muslim Brotherhood Project.
(1April 07)“…The world's 1.4 billion Muslims seem overwhelmingly enraged by the war in Iraq and the suffering caused by US military intervention. But there appears to be little, if any, outrage against the sectarian bloodletting that has killed more Iraqis than war directly involving American troops…. Muslim leaders and intellectuals find it easier to criticise outsiders for harm inflicted on Muslims. When it comes to recognising the suffering caused by fellow believers, the tendency is to fudge the issue… Since the emergence of Western nations as the world's dominant powers, Muslim thinkers and leaders have been preoccupied with how to reverse Muslim decline….” Muslims must recognise the enemy within Husain Haqqani, The Australian “…There is a rush to condemn the foreigners and the colonisers, and an unwillingness to identify where we may be going wrong ourselves. There is still little effort to recognise the real reasons for Muslim humiliation and backwardness…. almost half the world's Muslim population is illiterate, and the combined gross domestic product of the member states of the Organisation of Islamic Conference hovers near the GDP of France alone….National pride in the Muslim world is derived not from productivity, technological innovation or intellectual output, but from the rhetoric of "destroying the enemy".
(1April 07) “…The threat of Islamism that is obvious to the anti-jihadist bloggers and alternative news services has not seeped into the general consciousness of non-Muslim world. There is a litany of reasons why this is so, ranging from the lack of coverage by the MSM, the lack of comprehension by our political and military leaders, the mislabeling of the struggle - and of course the appeasers and apologists who muddy up the education of the couch potatoes who would rather watch American Idol or the ongoing soap opera of Anna Nicole Smith than enlighten themselves to the Islamic threat before us…. But there is hope. A group of Muslim apostates who have left Islam out of their own conviction that the religion of Islam is not a religion at all is trying to do something about the creep of Sharia law. Their site is Islam Watch and they have posted a series on articles entitled No Sharia . They believe that we now know enough about Islam to formulate a detailed, practical and effective policy that will keep Europe free for the next few hundred years….” Storm Track Infiltration: Resisting the Islamist Agenda for the Free World “…The aim of the first article in the series was to give a prognosis of the political development in European countries if the on-going Islamization process is not interrupted. The conclusion of that analysis is that the dreams of a peaceful transition to Eurabia is a complete illusion. What we will experience in the future in European countries is an ever increasing level of violence interrupted by spikes of violent cruelty. Civil strife and in the end civil war in some countries, if the Islamization process is not stopped…..That's not a new prognosis. Fjordman has been saying this for some time. What is new is the attempt of the writers at Islam Watch to formulate a Theory of Policies and Laws That Prevents Islamization of a Country …”
