Friends of Science

(15April06) This very user-friendly and easy to navigate site, Friends of Science is worth book marking for future reference on the Global Warming debate

Climate of Fear

(13April06)“…how can a barely discernible, one-degree increase in the recorded global mean temperature since the late 19th century possibly gain public acceptance as the source of recent weather catastrophes? And how can it translate into unlikely claims about future catastrophes?....The answer has much to do with misunderstanding the science of climate, plus a willingness to debase climate science into a triangle of alarmism. Ambiguous scientific statements about climate are hyped by those with a vested interest in alarm…Scientists who dissent from the alarmism have seen their grant funds disappear, their work derided, and themselves libeled as industry stooges, scientific hacks or worse. Consequently, lies about climate change gain credence even when they fly in the face of the science that supposedly is their basis…” Climate of Fear by Richard Lindzen, Professor of Atmospheric Science at MIT, The Wall Street Journal “…what the public fails to grasp is that the claims neither constitute support for alarm nor establish man's responsibility for the small amount of warming that has occurred. In fact, those who make the most outlandish claims of alarm are actually demonstrating skepticism of the very science they say supports them….how is it that we don't have more scientists speaking up about this junk science? It's my belief that many scientists have been cowed not merely by money but by fear….there is a strange reluctance to actually find out how climate really behaves. In 2003, when the draft of the U.S. National Climate Plan urged a high priority for improving our knowledge of climate sensitivity, the National Research Council instead urged support to look at the impacts of the warming--not whether it would actually happen …”

There IS a problem with global warming... it stopped in 1998

(12April06) “…For many years now, human-caused climate change has been viewed as a large and urgent problem. In truth, however, the biggest part of the problem is neither environmental nor scientific, but a self-created political fiasco….Since the early 1990s, the columns of many leading newspapers and magazines, worldwide, have carried an increasing stream of alarmist letters and articles on hypothetical, human-caused climate change…The problem here is not that of climate change per se, but rather that of the sophisticated scientific brainwashing that has been inflicted on the public, bureaucrats and politicians alike…” There IS a problem with global warming... it stopped in 1998 by Prof Bob Carter geologist at James Cook University , Queensland , engaged in paleoclimate research “.. The essence of the issue is this. Climate changes naturally all the time, partly in predictable cycles, and partly in unpredictable shorter rhythms and rapid episodic shifts, some of the causes of which remain unknown. We are fortunate that our modern societies have developed during the last 10,000 years of benignly warm, interglacial climate. But for more than 90 per cent of the last two million years, the climate has been colder, and generally much colder, than today. The reality of the climate record is that a sudden natural cooling is far more to be feared, and will do infinitely more social and economic damage, than the late 20th century phase of gentle warming…”

The left and hysteria

(28Sept05) “…If you want to understand the Left, the best place to start is with an understanding of hysteria. Leading leftists either use hysteria as a political tactic or are actually hysterics.” The left and hysteria by Dennis Prager  “No event is free of leftist hysteria. On the third day after Katrina, civil rights activist Randall Robinson reported that blacks in New Orleans were resorting to cannibalism. Indeed, most of the news media coverage bordered on the hysterical….the irony in all of this is that the Left sees itself as the side that thinks intellectually and non-emotionally. And that is hysterical.

No shame: The federal response to Katrina was not as portrayed

(14Sept05) "The federal government pretty much met its standard time lines, but the volume of support provided during the 72-96 hour was unprecedented. The federal response here was faster than Hugo, faster than Andrew, faster than Iniki, faster than Francine and Jeanne." No shame: The federal response to Katrina was not as portrayed by Jack Kelly “…Journalists who are long on opinions and short on knowledge have no idea what is involved in moving hundreds of tons of relief supplies into an area the size of England in which power lines are down, telecommunications are out, no gasoline is available, bridges are damaged, roads and airports are covered with debris, and apparently have little interest in finding out….. A better question -- which few journalists ask -- is why weren't the roughly 2,000 municipal and school buses in New Orleans utilized to take people out of the city before Katrina struck ?”

City of New Orleans Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan

(13Sept05) “..The safe evacuation of threatened populations when endangered by a major catastrophic event is one of the principle reasons for developing a Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan…..Due to the geography of New Orleans and the varying scales of potential disasters and their resulting emergency evacuations, different plans are in place for small-scale evacuations and for citywide relocations of whole populations.” City of New Orleans Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan  “.. Authority to issue evacuations of elements of the population. By Executive Order, the chief elected official, the Mayor of the City of New Orleans, has the authority to order the evacuation of residents threatened by an approaching hurricane ….As established by the City of New Orleans Charter , the government has jurisdiction and responsibility in disaster response. City government shall coordinate its efforts through the Office of Emergency Preparedness …The authority to order the evacuation of residents threatened by an approaching hurricane is conferred to the Governor by Louisiana Statute. The Governor is granted the power to direct and compel the evacuation of all or part of the population from a stricken or threatened area within the State, if he deems this action necessary for the preservation of life or other disaster mitigation, response or recovery.”

Katrina's devastation -powerpoint show

(9Sept05) Just to prove the point that the Mayor of New Orleans screwed up, note the Yellow Buses, dozens of them under water. Why weren't these deployed?? The other shots give an idea as to the scale, and dimension of the devastation. Myths of Hurricane Katrina

(9Sept05) “To America 's Angry Left it was yet another occasion to score political points against President George W. Bush. In the same spirit of opportunism that animated looters who stole television sets, Bush's political foes frantically sought to blame the devastation on him.” Myths of Hurricane Katrina by James Taranto “…Katrina was an equal-opportunity destroyer. The media's coverage of the disaster understandably centred on New Orleans , the biggest city in the region, which is two-thirds black. But the storm also devastated at least four suburban Louisiana parishes and three coastal Mississippi counties. All have white majorities, ranging from 69.8 per cent to 90.2 per cent.”

Don't Blame Bush for Katrina

(9Sept05)“..the primary responsibility for the disaster response lies with New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco and other local officials..” Don't Blame Bush for Katrina by Christopher Ruddy “.. New Orleans ' city leaders did almost nothing to evacuate the portion of the population with no transportation. In failing to follow their own evacuation plan, these officials did little to pre-position food, water and personnel to deal with the aftermath… The city's plan also specifically called for the use of city-owned buses and school buses to evacuate the population. These were apparently never deployed, though the Parish of Plaquemines just south of the city evacuated its population using school buses…”

Hurricane of Lies

(9Sept05)“…only the next morning, with Katrina less than 24 hours away, did (Ray) Nagin finally order his city to be emptied. Yet he did nothing to make sure it did. Hurricane of Lies by Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun. “He sent no police through the streets to sound the alarm. He did not empty the hospitals. He sent no buses to take poorer citizens from this poorest of cities -- people with no car or money to flee. In fact, more than 200 of his school buses were later found neatly parked, still in their depot, up to their useless engines in flood water….So when Katrina struck on Monday, 100,000 people -- largely the sickest and poorest -- were still in their doomed city, half in the Superdome and convention centre. There they found no chemical toilets, few medics, no water purification equipment, not enough police and little food or water. The 26,000 at the Superdome, for instance, had been left food just enough for 15,000 for three days. All this was Nagin's responsibility . Not Bush's. And it explains those pitiful scenes of stranded people begging for food.”

New Orleans: A Green Genocide

(9Sept05) “..Decades ago, the Green Left – pursuing its agenda of valuing wetlands and topographical “diversity” over human life – sued to prevent the Army Corps of Engineers from building floodgates that would have prevented significant flooding that resulted from Hurricane Katrina. ” New Orleans: A Green Genocide by Michael Tremoglie. FrontPageMagazine.com ”… scientists had long warned about New Orleans' vulnerability to the potential for massive loss of life caused by such things as the environmentalists' lawsuit …”

Masques of Death

(5Sept05) “… New Orleans was ripe for collapse. Its dangerous geography, combined with a dangerous culture, made it susceptible to an unfolding catastrophe. Currents of chaos and lawlessness were running through the city long before this week, and they were bound to come to the surface under the pressure of natural disaster and explode in a scene of looting and mayhem Masques of Death by George Neumayr, American Spectator. “..Criminals have ruled New Orleans for some time, convincing many members of the middle class, long before the hurricane, that the city was unlivable. In 1994, New Orleans was the murder capital of America . It had 421 murders that year. Criminologists predicted 300 murders this year, a projection that now looks quite conservative.”

An Unnatural Disaster: A Hurricane Exposes the Man-Made Disaster of the Welfare State

(5Sept05)“The man-made disaster we are now witnessing in New Orleans did not happen over four days last week. It happened over the past four decades. Hurricane Katrina merely exposed it to public view. The man-made disaster is the welfare state. An Unnatural Disaster: A Hurricane Exposes the Man-Made Disaster of the Welfare State by Robert Tracinski “..People living in piles of their own trash, while petulantly complaining that other people aren't doing enough to take care of them and then shooting at those who come to rescue them—this is not just a description of the chaos at the Superdome. It is a perfect summary of the 40-year history of the welfare state and its public housing projects. The welfare state—and the brutish, uncivilized mentality it sustains and encourages—is the man-made disaster that explains the moral ugliness that has swamped New Orleans . And that is the story that no one is reporting.

Drowning New Orleans

(3Sept05) How Prophetic is this? From Scientific American October 2001.“..A major hurricane could swamp New Orleans under 20 feet of water, killing thousands.” Drowning New Orleans by Mark Fishetti “Human activities along the Mississippi River have dramatically increased the risk, and now only massive reengineering of southeastern Louisiana can save the city.”

DDT-Eating Scientist exposes eco-fraud

(4Jul05) In 1962, when Rachel Carson published her breakthrough book on the environment, "Silent Spring," J Gordon Edwards was delighted. The young scientist eagerly raced through the first several chapters, but as he did, his anticipation eroded into uneasiness: "I noticed many statements that I realized were false." DDT-Eating Scientist exposes eco-fraud by Jack Cashill. “…..The title of the book derives from an opening "fable" in which a "strange blight" has crept over an imagined American town, casting its "evil spell" and spreading a "strange stillness" across the land. Throughout the book, Carson uses words like "toxins," "contaminants," "hazards," "death-dealing materials," and the inevitable "poison" where others might use "chemical" or "insecticide." And she never lets up…. Carson 's iconic status never slowed Edwards down. In a series of articles and very public presentations, he exposed Carson and others like her who would deceive the public to advance their cause…”

Common misconceptions about Global Warming

Global warming

(9April05) You may have missed the Michael Duffy Counterpoint program concerning global warming on Monday April 4 2005. You can listen to the program or printout the transcript. It is well worth the listen. From what I can tell the streaming only remains up for 3 weeks or a month , but the transcripts are readily available for longer.

On the same topic in the Sydney Morning Herald:   “…Antarctic ice cores show that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has varied considerably over the past several million years. Interestingly, there is a relationship with temperature: warming precedes rises in carbon dioxide. This is the opposite of the panel's claim that rising levels of human-produced carbon dioxide have led to warming…..” A cold, hard look at a hot topic by Michael Duffy “…The IPCC review process is fatally flawed. The behaviour of Michael Mann is a disgrace to the profession. The scientific basis for the Kyoto Protocol is grossly inadequate…..In Germany in the late 1980s, the conservative chancellor Helmut Kohl "quite deliberately talked up climate change as a problem because he wanted to compromise the Social Democrats and the Greens… It was the ultimate political wedge and, says Kellow, typical of the way in which some with particular agendas have found the idea of human-produced and potentially catastrophic global warming useful….”

Greenery has overgrown fair debate

(20Mar05) “..Green propaganda is now so pervasive in the media and public debate it has become part of the cultural background…”  Writes Michael Duffy in   Greenery has overgrown fair debate. In his first Sydney Morning Herald column, Duffy again highlights  the total and absolute bias, betrayal and lack of balance of the ABC. “… Anyone concerned by the left's domination of cultural institutions in this country will be further depressed by the sad example of this program, the cover-up afterwards, and the lack of interest in the whole sordid affair from the media..”

Age of No Reason

(27 Feb05) "Want to make a greenie boil? Just question their claims of global warming. It's not hard when so much of the evidence is paper thin", writes Andrew Bolt in Age of No Reason

Tsunami Ripples: A New Strategic Map

(11Jan05) “…No region of the world is so complex, or so thick with both threats and opportunities. The Indian Ocean region is not only critical in detail, but has an overall importance even greater than its parts…. This is where Islam must — and can — change; where nuclear weapons are likeliest to be used; where the future economic potential is vast; where the bulk of the world's heroin is produced; and where the heroin of the world economy — oil — could be cut off with a handful of nuclear weapons (think Iran, the Suez Canal and a few Arab ports)….” Tsunami Ripples: A New Strategic Map by Ralph Peters

Not So Dry Continent- Australia has water options

"Based on the popular assumption that Australia is a "dry" continent, greens, bureaucrats and politicians have pursued the policy line of least resistance on the looming shortage of water. They have largely looked at reducing water available to irrigation farming, as well as improved water efficiency measures. Governments have bowed to the green lobby, adopting a "no new dams" policy". If Environmentalism Succeeds, It Will Make Human Life Impossible

"Earth Day approaches, and with it a grave danger faces mankind. The danger is not from acid rain, global warming, smog, or the logging of rain forests, as environmentalists would have us believe. The danger to mankind is from environmentalism." If Environmentalism Succeeds, It Will Make Human Life Impossible -By Michael S. Berliner- The Ayn Rand Institute- 14 April 2004

Children 'being brainwashed' by new green geography lessons

"...Pupils are leaving secondary school knowing "everything about pollution but nothing about rivers or mountains", say researchers from Canterbury University about the new "greenwash" approach to teaching. Environmentalism: The Anti-Industrial Revolution

'Earth Day is celebrated every year as the symbol of environmentalism'. 'Contrary to much popular belief, environmentalism is not a benevolent movement seeking to improve man's life by cleaning up the air and water. As a doctrine -- an "ism" -- it is fundamentally an attack on the ideals of Western civilization.' Environmentalism: The Anti-Industrial Revolution from the Ayn Rand Institute.
