Doctor Death in Bundaberg

(1Feb06)This makes for excellent, yet chilling reading about Jayant Patel (Dr Death) and the full story of what happened at Bundaberg Hospital. The article is from Quadrant Magazine December 2005 .

“…Time was now running out, and when the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners further restricted his permit to practise in September 2000, and with New York State forcing him to surrender his licence in April 2001, it was time to jump ship… But where could Doctor Death go? Where could a man like this find both employment and a salary of the kind he now expected and required, when his record was known in the USA, and when anyone who studied that record would suspect he was not merely incompetent but quite possibly mentally unbalanced—a man with a barely controllable urge to cut and slash, who shouldn't be allowed within five miles of an operating theatre?” Doctor Death in Bundaberg by Roger Sandall, Quadrant Magazine “…The opinion of the US victim of a back-to-front colostomy that left him impotent has already been mentioned in this regard (Patel, he said, was “a sociopath in Oregon, who became a psychopath in Australia”). In Australia Patel undertook an operation without anaesthetic…. When a new Director of Nursing, Ms Linda Mulligan, was appointed at the hospital, Toni Hoffman ( the whistleblower ) tried to enlist her help. But it was soon obvious that Ms Mulligan had no intention of involving herself in the wards. She did give Hoffman a book to help the manager of the Intensive Care Unit resolve what Ms Mulligan believed was an unjustified personal hostility to Patel. If that failed, she said, then perhaps Hoffman should seek psychological counseling”

Ban Asian marriages of cousins, says MP

(20Dec05) Marriages between cousins should be banned after research showed alarming rates in defective births among Asian communities in Britain, a Labour MP said last night…."We address problems of smoking, drinking, obesity and we say it's a public health issue, therefore we have to get involved with persuading people to adopt a different lifestyle," Ban Asian marriages of cousins, says MP from the UK Telegraph “..It is estimated that more than 55 per cent of British Pakistanis are married to first cousins, resulting in an increasing rate of genetic defects and high rates of infant mortality. The likelihood of unrelated couples having the same variant genes that cause recessive disorders are estimated to be 100-1. Between first cousins, the odds increase to as much as one in eight…”

You smoke. He drinks. We all need help

(1Nov05)“..One of George Best's favourite (and most over-repeated) anecdotes concerns the time that he won a bundle of cash in a casino. He chucked the dosh on his bed in the Savoy , ordered champagne and waited for Miss UK to finish getting undressed in the bathroom. When the waiter came in with the booze, he was confronted by a bed covered in pound notes and by Miss UK in all her glory coming naked out of the bathroom. His comment was: "Forgive me for asking, Mr Best, but where did it all go wrong?" You smoke. He drinks. We all need help Oliver James (The Independent) “..Our national attitude was more ambivalent. Part of us agreed with the story he told. We admired his freedom - not just on the pitch - and, in the Sixties, his slim, trendily mop-topped embrace of the role of working-class lad made good (the tabloids dubbed him the Fifth Beatle). We also vicariously enjoyed his subsequent refusal to grow up, settle down and realise the meaning of the word "enough". He was our (alcoholically) licensed Peter Pan..”

Only way out for addicts is to say no

(14Oct05) “Thank God for the Salvos. In treating alcoholics and other addicts, the Salvation Army still aims for complete abstinence rather than so-called "controlled" drinking or drug use….No matter how long they have been sober, alcoholics in the Bridge Program and in AA always speak of their alcoholism in the present tense: "My name is ... and I am an alcoholic."…. in the past 25 years in Australia an anti-abstinence orthodoxy has become entrenched in health department practice and policy, with extremely unfortunate results…” Only way out for addicts is to say no by Ross Fitzgerald “… What is particularly damaging is that alcoholics and their families are given the false hope that controlled drinking is a viable option and that abstinence is not necessary for alcoholics and other addicts….For more than 40 years the Salvation Army has kept the faith in its commitment to total abstinence as the prime therapeutic goal for alcoholics and other addicts. Fortunately we are now beginning to see a return to the abstinence model by an increasing number of psychologists and medical practitioners, and to once again valuing AA as the most effective form of long-term therapy for Australians addicted to alcohol.”

Disability allowances

(18Sept05)“…In the madhouse of today's Britain, even the crack addict and the violent thug can be classified as disabled under anti-discrimination regulations…..almost any selfish or dangerous conduct can now be categorised as mental illness. In this twisted world all concepts of morality and personal responsibility have been lost, replaced by a determination to medicalise every behavioural problem.” Disability allowances by Leo McKinstr y , Spectator Magazine “..Any attempt to tell them to behave in a civilised manner is a form of discrimination in itself….The ever-expanding definition of disability is no frivolous matter. For it has allowed those with personal problems, like alcoholism or drug addiction, to wallow in a permanent sense of grievance, regarding themselves as victims of a medical condition….While tens of millions of ordinary Britons work hard in their jobs, the field of employment law is now geared towards those who want to evade their responsibilities…”

Codex

(3May05) I have been inundated with people asking about the push by Codex, the World Health Organisation and many government agencies and instrumentalities to basically hand over the production, and marketing of supplementary medicines solely to the International Pharmaceutical Companies.

Australia has signed on so it would seem and it also seems that it's a pretty well guarded secret. It comes into play as of July the 1 st 2005. A précis as to what it's all about can be found here.

For a greater overview I suggest you visit the Eve Hillary site.

On issues of this nature I simply put them on the site so as you can peruse them and and arrive at your own conclusions

Anorexia linked to brain defect, rather than social pressures.

(13Apr05) Many people have asked that I post this article on Anorexia: “The eating disorder anorexia nervosa could be caused by a brain dysfunction, rather than social pressures, a study shows…” Anorexia linked to brain defect, rather than social pressures. 'The biological cause has been under-emphasised and the socio-cultural pressures have been over-emphasised,' he said. 'There has to be a biological contribution otherwise everyone would be anorexic, given the socio-cultural pressures in our society ".

Bottled water a waste of money

(28Mar05) More on the bottle versus the tap

"…premium" bottled water such as Mount Franklin sells in supermarkets for about $1.60 a litre - 209,333 per cent more than tap water, which in Melbourne costs 0.075 of a cent per litre…..” Bottled water a waste of money.

“….Grant Hose, research fellow in ecotoxicology at UTS, who oversaw the analysis, said the results showed that the notion that bottled water was somehow more "pure" than tap water was incorrect. …Tap water is as healthy for you as bottled water - it's no different," Dr Hose said.

Breast Cancer Mystery Frustrates Scientists

(13Feb05) “…We knew more about the cause of breast cancer 20 years ago than we do today," Richard Stevens said. "What we do know is that it must have something to do with industrialized society…. Now, Richard Stevens and a few other researchers are focusing on a little-known suspect - electric light. Breast Cancer Mystery Frustrates Scientists  “Their theory that artificial light can cause breast cancer is simple. Prolonged periods of exposure to artificial light disrupt the body's circadian rhythms - the inner biological clocks honed over thousands of years of evolution to regulate behaviors such as sleep and wakefulness…. Mankind has only been exposed to these light sources for 150 years or so," Stevens said”

Is your illness all in the mind?

(13Feb05) “There is growing evidence that a patient's outlook on life can affect their chances of recovering from disease. And having negative thoughts could even make you sick.” Roger Dobson investigates  in Is your illness all in the mind?   “…. a large number of studies have shown that people who are depressed suffer greater levels of disease and illness, but research is increasingly showing that happiness and positive attitudes can have the opposite effect…”.

Official: love can damage your health

A Gut feeling

Back in 1908, Elie Metchnikoff, a Russian microbiologist, observed that the Bulgarian peasantry tended to live to a ripe old age. After investigation, he concluded that the secret of their longevity was the yoghurt they drank. His theory led to a vogue for drinking soured milk in the belief that it would prolong life. Was this A Gut feeling ?

Grubs up

“…The use of maggots was once dismissed as quackery, now they're back in modern hospitals. And drinking worm eggs could help to treat IBS. But will patients stomach it? " Maggot Therapy  Is it hard to stomach?? Grubs up by Hugh Wilson

It's My Life

(1/3/02)  This is all about the denigration of excellence that has infested all aspects of society over the last 30 years. You need a UAI of 99.7 to get into Medical School. When you read It's My Life you can't help but wonder why anyone would bother. Although this is from an American perspective it is exactly the same in Australia, if not worse.
