Submission: Why Australia should introduce a formal citizenship test
(22Nov 06) On Friday December 17 th 2006, the window closed on the opportunity for Australian to submit what they believe should be considered with respect to an Australian Citizenship test.
One of my regular callers “Will” copied me in on his submission. He makes a very lucid and cogent case.

It is clearly perceived throughout the West that there is a hostile campaign being waged against it by people from many nations who describe themselves as Muslims and who openly profess to aspire to the goal of introducing sharia law throughout the world. Sharia law is law that is based on the Islamic scriptures of the Koran. Many high-level international debates have been held regarding the compatibility of sharia law with democracy, and it is the overwhelming consensus both within and without the ranks of supporters of sharia that it is not compatible with Western democracy…. That which should be first highlighted is freedom of speech. The sharia law makes it illegal to criticise Muhammed, and this includes the critiquing of the Koran in any way that would represent a scrutiny of Muhammed. (16Nov 06) Christopher Monckton created considerable controversy last week with his article questioning the science that claims human activity is responsible for climate change. Now he challenges the economic assumptions of the Stern report … In the climate change debate, one figure is real. The Sunday Telegraph's website registered more than 127,000 hits in response to last week's article revealing that the UN had minimised the sun's role in changing past and present climate, persisted in proven errors and used unsound data, questionable graphs and meretricious maths to exaggerate future warming threefold. The views of 200 readers who emailed me are in the link above. About a third are scientists, including well-known climatologists and a physicist who confirmed my calculations. Some advise governments. Nearly all condemn the "consensus". Most feel that instead of apologising, the UN has misled them… The UK accounts for just 2 per cent of global emissions, and falling. Even if Britain stopped using energy altogether, global temperature by 2035 would be six thousandths of a degree C less than if we carried on as usual. If we shut down once a week on Planet Day, make that less than one thousandth of a degree…. Climate Chaos? Don't believe it
(10Nov 06) “….Sir Nicholas Stern's report on the economics of climate change, which was published last week, says that the debate is over. It isn't….This week, I'll show how the UN undervalued the sun's effects on historical and contemporary climate, slashed the natural greenhouse effect, overstated the past century's temperature increase, repealed a fundamental law of physics and tripled the man-made greenhouse effect….Next week, I'll demonstrate the atrocious economic, political and environmental cost of the high-tax, zero-freedom, bureaucratic centralism implicit in Stern's report; I'll compare the global-warming scare with previous sci-fi alarums; and I'll show how the environmentalists' "precautionary principle" (get the state to interfere now, just in case) is killing people….the UN implies that carbon dioxide ended the last four ice ages. It displays two 450,000-year graphs: a sawtooth curve of temperature and a sawtooth of airborne CO2 that's scaled to look similar. Usually, similar curves are superimposed for comparison. The UN didn't do that. If it had, the truth would have shown: the changes in temperature preceded the changes in CO2 levels….” Climate Chaos? Don't believe it by Christopher Monckton, Sunday Telegraph “…The Antarctic, which holds 90 per cent of the world's ice and nearly all its 160,000 glaciers, has cooled and gained ice-mass in the past 30 years, reversing a 6,000-year melting trend….The entire 20th-century warming from all sources was below 2 watts. The sun could have caused just about all of it. Next, the UN slashed the natural greenhouse effect by 40 per cent from 33C in the climate-physics textbooks to 20C, making the man-made additions appear bigger. Then the UN chose the biggest 20th-century temperature increase it could find. Stern says: "As anticipated by scientists, global mean surface temperatures have risen over the past century." As anticipated ? Only 30 years ago, scientists were anticipating a new Ice Age and writing books called The Cooling….constant repetition of wrong numbers doesn't make them right. Removing the UN's solecisms, and using reasonable data and assumptions, a simple global model shows that temperature will rise by just 0.1 to 1.4C in the coming century, with a best estimate of 0.6C, well within the medieval temperature range and only a fifth of the UN's new, central projection….”

World Bank, WTO, and corporate control over water
(07Nov 06) Ordinarily I wouldn't be too interested in a piece from The International Socialist Review, however given the drought, the present water debate and the resistance by governments to fixing the problem both short term and long term and the now open promulgation and advocacy of full privatisation of our water this article from 2001 makes for compelling reading.
“…While privatization and globalization have been accompanied by the rhetoric of the disappearing role of the state, what we see instead is the state increasingly intervening through policies, rules, laws, investment, and technology in shifting control over water from communities and the public to commercial, corporate interest…. the World Bank is now transforming the scarcity it has created into a market opportunity for water corporations. The World Bank estimates the potential water market at $800 billion…. the crisis of pollution and depletion of water resources is viewed by Monsanto as a business opportunity. For Monsanto, "sustainable development" means the conversion of an ecological crisis into a market of scarce resources…. The World Bank has recently initiated water sector reforms, aimed primarily at privatization of water resources and commercialization of water management. The privatization policy recommends commercializing operations at all levels, private investment, substantial increase in water prices, increase in agricultural power tariffs, and creation of water markets… Water has become big business for global corporations that see limitless markets in the growing scarcity and growing demand for water…” World Bank, WTO, and corporate control over water by Vandana Shiva “…Privatization of water services leads to increases in water prices. In France , customer fees increased by 150 percent as a result of privatization, but water quality deteriorated. A French government report revealed that more than 5.2 million citizens received "bacterially unacceptable" water. In England , water rates increased by 450 percent, profits of water companies increased by 692 percent, and salaries of CEOs increased 708 percent. Meanwhile, the number of customers who have been disconnected from water services as a result of the price hikes has increased by 50 percent.
